One of the first things I learned when I started my spiritual practice was about protection spells. I remember working with my first mentor Elena and how she would describe the importance of protection, especially for magical people.

Put it this way: if you’re a shining beacon of light, everyone will notice you. Which means you will attract everything that’s around you, the good to the bad.

If you’re a magical or intuitive person like me, you’ve probably experienced stuck energy inside your body or even your home. Here’s what I mean when I say stuck energy:

  • You walk into a room and suddenly feel overwhelmed.
  • You’re meeting someone new and just getting a weird vibe.
  • You leave a place or event and feel drained the moment you are home.
  • You feel a sense of sadness that you can’t point your finger at why.

This means you are picking up on energy. A lot of people who call themselves empaths or empathic are usually the ones who pick up on energy all the time.

Some will say that they are overly sensitive, but what most empaths don’t realize is that they can bring energy back home without their knowledge. This can have an affect on our bodies and minds and can result in things like nightmares, a string of off days, or just not feeling like yourself.

If you have ever experienced this, it could mean that you have some stuck energy in your body. The good news is that regardless of whether you are an empath or you just want to clear your energy for your mental well-being, there are many ways you can clear your energy, and some of these are free!

Baths

As a Pisces, I love a good bath whenever I can squeeze one in. I make my baths sacred by lighting candles, decorating the bath with things like flowers or essential oils.

Some other great items to use in baths are herbs like lavender or roses, epsom salt which is great to clear out any stagnant energy in your body, and music to set the mood. Sometimes I will go full goddess mode and have a glass of wine.

If you do not have a bathtub, a shower can have the same effect. You simply take your favorite Epsom salt and use it as a scrub to wash away any negative energy. A quick tip: Make sure you get the bottom of your feet!

Smoke Clearing

If you like lighting some incense, smoke clearing is a great way to set the vibe and also clear out negative energy. There are multiple items you can use such as palo santo, incense sticks, or sage bundles.

Simply light the incense or herb, and walk around your home to remove any unwanted energy. You can also wave the incense or herb around your body to remove any stuck energy in your aura.

However if you are using sage, please make sure its properly sourced and you either honor or follow the cultural importance of this ritual in Native American lineage.

Trees/Nature Grounding

There is nothing more grounding than being in nature. While nature has always been known to heal and cleanse your energy for decades, science has finally caught up uncovering that being in nature has tremendous positive effects on your physical and mental health.

This can be very simple: a walk in the park while listening to soothing music, sitting in your backyard with your eyes closed and taking deep breaths, or placing your hands on the ground releasing any unstuck energy into the earth for it to be recycled into love and light.

Try this out for 10-20 minutes and see if you feel a difference afterwards!

Protection Wards

These are perfect to have around your home. Protection wards are personal items that you use to create a protection around your home.

Some use bowls and add herbs like rosemary, rue, and lavendar for protection. Others use plants as protection wards and add coins and trinkets to add extra protective energy. If you do have protection wards, make sure that you are always cleaning them out and taking care of them as they will always need to be tended to.

If you want a more subtle way to incorporate protection into your home, you can draw a protection sigils underneath your doormat. Just make sure you check in every now and then as sigils do disappear over time.

Meditation

Then there is nothing like the classics, good old meditation. While some people feel like meditation is the hardest thing to do, it’s actually the best practice to let go of any unwanted energy and to come back to your center.

Meditation incorporates everything: grounding, clearing, and protecting. When you are in meditation, you get to decipher which emotion is yours and which one isn’t. In meditation, you get to know your energy and how to maintain it.

If you want to give meditation a try, you can follow along with guided meditations that are available in apps like Headspace or Calm or even YouTube. Aim for 10 minutes a day and work your way up from there.
